MORE UPDATE OMGz

Got a new phone on Friday. I had a Pay as You Go model that was used with a Family Plan, and now I have a red Juke. I. Love. It. Not even for the music player aspect, either. It's just a really slick design for someone like me. (I have small hands and long fingernails, for one major factor)

Visited [livejournal.com profile] sanji_cat for the first time in a while. Last time I saw her was at ALA. She's such a sweetheart T^T

Somewhere last week, I lost my sanity when MUCC (specifically their bassist) created a blog finally. How did I lose it? I said that I'd translate it. Why? Because I was insane for about 46 hours. But it's doing well. [livejournal.com profile] muccbrog is the community. Tell your friends that like this band called "muck". :D All the members have been very supportive and gracious and patient and appreciative of my efforts T-T

Next month, [livejournal.com profile] otaku_jrock and I find out the results of the manga competition.

April 10th, we have the Taste of Chaos tour (with MUCC and D'espairsRay and Transtic Nerve). W00t.

Updates

It's been a while since I've actually updated...

Let's see.

Been taking Japanese classes alongside Photography. I have Color photo this spring, and then I get my certificate. <3 I'll take Japanese 3 in the Fall, helping [livejournal.com profile] flaming_loffel while she takes Japanese 2 during the Spring.

Still don't have a job. D: Gay. I really need to call the photographers in the area and see if they need assistants. Of the 3, only one lists an address, and I seriously have no idea what to say over the phone... Any ideas?

The first Chapter of MidnighTokyo was sent off to Japan for the competition, just a few days shy of Christmas. I was tired of it and glad to be done, I am not kidding. But I like it. I'm proud of it, and I'm confident that it'll do well. Especially since I had a dream that it did. ^-^

ALA came and went, and I already updated with that.

Ari and I are working out details for Anime Expo. If anyone is going and needs a place to stay, let us know. We're always looking for roommates.

December 30th, my sister cut my hair. For those that don't know me too well, I had been growing my hair out since July 2002, when it was just above chin-length. It was at my butt by the time my sister hacked it off, and now it's roughly shoulder length. So, that was a major thing to us. Five and a half years of my life is now tied up in a Ziplock to either be sold or made into extensions. I'm also pretty interested in getting an Iple House Doll (Soo Ri, in particular), and would consider making a wig out of my leftovers, as well. But that's down the line.

And then a very tiny thing: Gackt killed my car radio. Right after Thanksgiving, I was driving to school and went over... not even a pothole. A large imperfection in the asphalt on the interchange, and my radio skipped while playing "Vanilla." Not only did it skip, but all buttons ceased to respond. And after hitting Reset, the radio pretty much spiraled down into electronic death. This radio, like my hair, was in my life for 5 and a half years. I loved it, it was the best radio that I could have asked for, for that price. And it was even a conversation piece. Well, it was dead and obsolete and beyond repair. Got a new one though, and it was installed right after the semester ended. Nowhere near as cool and nowhere near as handy to use, but it is easy to use, it isn't ugly, and it plays MP3s. XD My old one didn't do that.

Gackt is no longer allowed inside my car. Furthermore, this CD in question was literally pried out of the radio with pliers and a screwdriver and promptly thrown into the microwave for a 20-second victory celebration.

Anime Los Angeles 2008

It's about time that I updated with this. D:

K, so after getting back from my sister's on New Year's Day since Chazzle those that shall not be named moved our signage/bag stuffing day to the first, Ari and I high-tailed it to Granola Hills at like... 6 pm since traffic was just PEACHY between Arizona and California. But we got there and helped Evan get the signs put together and whatnot.

Did whatever on Wednesday.

On to the Convention! )

A great con, all in all, as it tends to be. Things will go more smoothly this year meetings-wise, hopefully. Enjoy!

In happier news

After some issues with compatibility (Read: Win 95 drivers installing onto Win 2K, and being so incompatible that I was unable to remove it, or anything else for that matter. I had to reinstall Win 2K to overwrite everything, including hardware drivers for which I do not and never have possessed a disk, and reinstall all of my old software), I was able to install my Zip Drive 100MB Parallel Port, and get all of my old files off of the disks.

These files include, but are not limited to:

  • Art files from Photoshop 4.0-5.0 days
  • Art from artists whose sites have died, or who have actually died
  • Pictures of animals that I downloaded a decade ago
  • Fan Fictions that have probably dropped off the face of the Internet
  • Posters that I scanned and pieced together.

:D I'll upload my old arts onto DArt soon.

BTW, this message posted from Cow, not Moo. ^_^

Random thought...

People to draw* before I die**

  • BUCK-TICK - Atsushi Sakurai
  • BUCK-TICK - Yutaka Higushi
  • Dir en Grey - DIE
  • Kagrra, - Isshi
  • Never Land - Hitoshi
  • D'espairsRay - Hizumi
  • D'espairsRay - Tsukasa
  • Malice Mizer - Yu~ki
  • Klaha
  • Gackt
  • Bleach - Renji Abarai

That's about all I can think of right now.

*: by "draw," I mean, "draw in charcoal on very large paper that can't be scanned all that easily."
**: by "die," I mean, "am maimed and lose my right hand."

Some updates...~!

I think I'll be taking three classes this fall, mainly because one class doesn't give me homework, but I might not take that class... Never mind. Money won't be an issue. I still have plenty of paper. Anyway.
Japanese 2.
Darkroom Techniques
and Business Grammar. Oooh yeah. This one's online. ^_^

Second. Jen from Anime Expo's Artist Alley (former head of the department) linked us to the Second International Manga competition hosted by Kodansha's Morning Magazine. Kodansha, for those not in the know, publish Vagabond, Black Jack, and.... if you don't know those... Sailormoon. If you don't know what Sailormoon is, stop reading.
The deadline is Dec. 31 2007, 12-50 pages limit, in English or Japanese.

We're using Midnight Tokyo, our private Roleplay game. XD

Third. Since all of our characters are either initially or secondarily modeled after a real life person, I had to go on a hunt to get more pictures of one of the more prominent characters. Since he's not so prominent in the music world (and recently retired this spring! :O), this meant going on a chain link hunt for blogs of the band members of the four bands that he was in (simultaneously) and looking for camera phone pictures of him. I was very successful, and even found a handful of live shots of him performing.

After three hours of this last night, I've fit the bill of "obsessing" over this guy. Fortunately, even though he retired from music (probably just a long hiatus; health got in the way), he still hangs out with the bands on occasion, and thus I can still get pictures periodically. ^-^

One day I'll update with Anime Expo.

Attention Artists

Spotted on [livejournal.com profile] phyrnyt's journal:

Every day, there are more and more Craigs List posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely. For more information on this subject, please visit [link].

So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them. Say NO to free art.

And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free…please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

If you agree with the above important information, please pass it along. The more people know, the faster we can correct this problem.

School rant

I'm taking Photojournalism and Advanced Photography this semester. My Journalism teacher, Bender, is awesome. She's very supportive, encouraging, positive, "don't take no for an answer," "you have a right to be there." A journalist. She's also challenging. Journalism requires people skills. Anyone that knows me in real life knows that People Skills 101 was the class I did not take. :] So, it's a good experience for me. I have to ask for names, ages, WTFs and YTFs and HTFs, I have to kiss ass... It's great. If I ever want to take pictures of concerts and celebrities and musicians... This is the way to go. That, and hang out. I need to be willing to spend the day; company would be nice, but at present I only know people that would eventually start whining. Very sad.

Advanced Photography, on the other hand... Ferris has a stick up his ass. Our first assignment was... "Show Me Your Best." He didn't want anything recycled. He wanted our best stuff at that point. Okay. We get that assignment back. I think maybe two people got a B, the rest all got a C. Uhm, okay... You just met most of us. How do you know what our best is and isn't? How do we make up this First, Introductory Assignment? That's like taking a test of abilities for the first time, with only the knowledge you have walking in, and then, after learning more skills and tricks and shortcuts, you take the test again. Of course it'll be better this time. YOU LEARNED MORE. That's not the assignment.

Next assignment was framing. Got a C on that. I didn't care; I hated Framing the second I learned it was a compositional technique. It's worse than the S Curve. S Curves are at least considered "Leading Lines." Framing is crap 90% of the time that I'm presented with it. He showed us a bunch of examples of it. They all sucked in my view. There was ONE example he showed us. The framing was secondary, if not Tertiary, to the main subject. The photo was of two dogs fighting beside a bridge archway. Were the dogs framed? No. The city in the background behind the bridge was framed in the archway. The city was washed out by the sunlight and smog. The Dogs were clearly the main focused, and they weren't framed. You know who showed me good examples of framing, and only two so far? Bender. Her own work. Her own, Non set-up work. Her Journalism, "don't let the subject know you're photographing them" shots. I. Hate. Framing.

The next assignment was "Unusual Perspective." How nice. I like this assignment. I get to take all sorts of weird shots. :D I went to the fire station and took pictures inside their garage. I climbed all over the fire truck, got under it; zoomed in close to valves and guages; took photos of their sweaty, crumbled up equipment (not sure what the actual name of the boots/pants/suspenders are...); took a photo of their hangers; got a reflection shot of the driver's window; got a shot that I have no idea what it was now that I look at it, it was so unsual; took pictures of chrome. I printed a picture of the bumper (Read: A corner of the grill) and the folded up firehose that was inside the cubby. I turn them in and get them back the following week. He holds them up to critique in front of the class. He gives me rave reviews for the chrome and hose texture, how great it is that I got it to look like metal, etc. etc. etc. "But I want to see more of it." (Read: I want it zoomed out.) He couldn't even tell that it was a grill, that's how "unusual" the shot was. "I want to see more." ... What part of UNUSUAL in "Unusual Perspective" are we not agreeing on? I realize that the actual assignment is open to interpretation. Robin Williams on a tricycle counts as unusual perspective. It's a different take on things. No. He wants "more." Not more photos of the grill, not a sprawled out shot of the hose... Zoomed out more. I got a C on that one.

I just turned in the Love assignment. Can't wait to see the big fat "75 = C+" on the back of THAT one when he hands it back.

August blahblahs

K, I have no job. Minimal income. Yay for that.

co-worker from Game Stop invited me to Vegas this weekend. I get a free room. ^_^ w00t.

Established which two costumes i want to make for next year's convention: Isshi (Kagrra,) from the "Gen ei no Katachi" video, and Manji from Blade of the Immortal. Plus Nazi Pirate SPOOn, Enrico Maxwell from Hellsing, and Naomi Hunter from Metal Gear Solid. *nods*

I was gonna be Isshi from "Ouka Ranman"'s video, but the kimono's pattern was almost impossible to replicate at the Fashion district yesterday, and not be spandex or polyester... =_= or SHEER. :| There was a Silk pattern but it was $20 a yard. @_@ 3-4 yards required. XÞ Plus a conceivable 2 yard Hapi... Blech. Now I just have to buy a blonde wig. o0 w00t.
*edit* And I was going to be Isshi from "Satsuki", but then I realized that the last thing I needed was another trench coat. XD At least this way, I still get a kimono out of the deal. And a black one, to boot. o0

Bought a bunch of JRock cds off Ebay and CDJapan. No more spending for me. *nods* $85 for 6 singles and an album (non bootleg). Not bad, if you ask me, but yeah. No more.

Anybody interested in commissioning me for art? Prices are negotiable, of course, you all being friends and everything. When it comes to color, I'm strictly Photoshop, 600 DPI 8x10", unless you want something specific like a bookmark or a CD label or something not just for framing or throwing in your notebook, and of course that'll alter the price (in your favor, typically).

Let me know. <3

Adventures in Cosplay 2006

K. AX is next week. No shit. o_O

Costumes for the year:
Enrico Maxwell of Hellsing (Crossfire edition)
Hiroshi Nagano of Gravitation (Manga edition)
Naomi Campbell of Metal Gear Solid
Almighty SPOOn (Nazi Pirate Bartender edition)

Status of each:
Maxwell required me to buy a pattern of a Priest Cassock. And black cloth. 7 yards of black cloth. o_O He's almost done. Need to sewing the lining in, hem it, and add the snaps. Mom sewed the sleeves on for me. D: They required ruffles. @_@

Hiroshi required a red, long sleeved button down. Good luck finding one of those in June. XD So, I bought a white shirt and decided to dye it. That was brilliant. Mom helped me out with that. We get the pot of water on the stove, and we're getting ready to test a piece of cloth out to see how the color goes on. She opens the bottle. Doesn't tell me that it's open, and has left the cap on the bottle, to boot. I grab the bottle and promptly shake it. :) Guess how THAT ended. XD Red concentrated dye all over the stove, and my shirt. Seriously, it looks like I slit my wrist or something while peeling potatos. XD It's great.

Naomi... I'm recycling the Otacon jacket. Need to find the clothes. I'll probably cheat though. Use black instead of what I figured to be brown. o_O Need shoes though.

SPOOn... Well, the Rum Party appointed me the official Nazi bartender this year, so I figured I'd just make that my SPOOn costume of the year. D: It works. :D

Artist Alley preparation is interesting. I did some color enhancements to two of my older prints. Working on one last one that I hopefully get done in time. I hope I do well this year. I want to try commissions. *nods*

Try my product?

*cough*hack*death*

Yeah... uh... *scratches head* Apparently I'm having a relapse in my cold that never really went away. Woke up with a frog in my throat again. No, I don't blame my 4-5 hours of sleep per night habit of the last three months. Not one bit. ^_^V

I can't help it; it's the only time I get to roleplay, schedule-wise. It's a nasty drug.
That, and I don't get home until 10 or 11 at night and I have to unwind, nevermind having been up since 7 or 8 in the morning. ^^ Anyway.

Apparently my digi photo class is meeting at the Getty on the 12th, the last day of E3. ;_; I'm gonna have to meet the guys on Wednesday or Tuesday, depending on their and my schedules. I miss them.

Mmm... Gonna try and set up another date with the guy that 'stood me up'.
And then I have another guy that wants to take me out once I'm feeling better and have a free weekend. I laughed at him for that comment; in good humor of course. ^^

Getting lazy with my art prints. I need to print out more copies of the ones that are done, and then I need to finish the new ones I want to bring to the convention. I'm fairly confident I'll do well this year, about as well as I did last year. I might try to do commissions more readily, not just $1 sketches. I'm just unsure of what to charge... :\ I figure $15-45 for simple to complex drawings, $70-120 for color (plus free print, signed and dated, of course)... o_o;; Does... that seem fair to you guys? Do you even know what I'm talking about? :D

New boss = fuckwit. I'm gonna file a formal complaint against him after class. ^_^V

SPAMMAGE

Sony Pictures is proud to present, SILENT HILL THE MOVIE. In theatres April 21st.

As well as, a POSTER CONTEST.

SPOOn's Submission
Quirk's Submission

Sadly for you, the deadline for submissions has passed. To make up for it, voting has begun! So sit back, relax, and take some time vote for my submission. Or Quirk's if you feel so inclined. Can't decide? Vote for one today, vote for the other the next day. Voting ends the 17th of January, and you can vote for one poster each day.

What does voting do for either of us? Well, the winning submission gets treated as a movie poster template, and will be seen in theatres along the walls in some mildly varied form. Very spiffy. Among a few other spiffy things, but that's the most noteable. So if either of these posters wins, you can pat yourself on the back and say, "I helped make that poster real. :D"

Thank you for your attention. :D

I only plug Quirk because he dragged me into the contest. ^^

There is nothing left but burnt remains.

No, I didn't burn my sketchbooks.

Anime Expo is in 9 days.

I'll be in Artist Alley for the third year. :D I'll have three new prints along with my normal assortment.

I'll also be attending the Metal Gear Solid Gathering on Friday, and hosting the Original Character gathering on Monday, and there will be a Midnight Rum party Sunday morning.
My friend'll be in AX Idol so I'll be in the audience for that, hopefully.
After that, everything else is fair game. I'm a big-time shopper though. ;D

Cosplay will include Chocolate Misu, Nazi SPOOn, Para-Medic, and Nazi U-boat captain SPOOn for the Rum Party.

Pop Quiz.

Ok, I'll let you guys all re-take the quiz since, as is the point of the POP quiz, you were all caught with your pants down. Or something.

The Question remains:

The piano is White or Black?

There is no right answer.
And there are a few more combinations, but just use your imagination.

Thanks!
