Sushi the Momo Way
Dec. 5th, 2006 09:33 pmSo I survived two weekends working for Momo Sushi.
Meiko and Katsu are of course wonderful.
Take is awesome.
Teresa is fun.
Yoko is a sweetheart.
Haruna.... is a bitch. ^^
I'm not sure if it's racism, or if she's afraid I'll take her place. But she seriously was giving me attitude all night, almost strictly because I was white rice.
"We don't do it THAT way; we do it the JapanESE way."
Shit. I've been working with Yoko and Take, who are more Japanese than you, and they didn't have one problem with how I did things. In fact, I got compliments for how well I did things on my first few nights.
Anyway. Haruna is probably my only problem. ... I lie. The Korean ladies in the kitchen are my other problem. ^^ Yoko doesn't even like them. But Yoko didn't get to see one of them burn my finger Sunday night. :O She handed me a naked Udon bowl. (That means the piping hot ceramic bowl had no plate underneath when she handed it to me. Was she using pot holders? No. She held it by the very lip of the bowl and the base.) I grabbed it. It hurt. I gave it back to her. I nearly stuffed my hand into the ice machine.
It stole a lot of precious homework time from me, but I got paid well for it, and it was worth it if only for the company. Rephrase. The money made up for the time lost. I would have worked for free if final projects weren't an issue.
That and our Dir en Grey tickets are sitting by the calendar, waiting for the 23rd of February to roll around. ^__________________^ I'm stoked.

Addendum p2
Oct. 19th, 2006 06:13 pmHe gave me a public apology during lecture today. Saying that he was over the top and he shouldn't have taken his opinion out on me, etc. etc., and that when he want to Borders the other day, he went to the thriller section and saw all these bookcovers with swastikas all over them, because they're Nazi conspiracy stories and people love those...
So I turned the pictures back in and said, "You will grade these as art, as photographs, and for their composition and exposure, and Not for any political statements you might not agree with."
And he took them.
Thanks to everyone for their support. Mosuke, Jojo, Jheti, Marc, Rika, Phyrnyt, Umbric, Koromiel, and Ari... I seriously have a hard time standing up for myself, and to have you all backing me up for this meant a great deal to me. It gave me the confidence to talk to the head of the department about it, and she dealt with it accordingly.
Thank you.

School rant
Oct. 6th, 2006 06:42 pmI'm taking Photojournalism and Advanced Photography this semester. My Journalism teacher, Bender, is awesome. She's very supportive, encouraging, positive, "don't take no for an answer," "you have a right to be there." A journalist. She's also challenging. Journalism requires people skills. Anyone that knows me in real life knows that People Skills 101 was the class I did not take. :] So, it's a good experience for me. I have to ask for names, ages, WTFs and YTFs and HTFs, I have to kiss ass... It's great. If I ever want to take pictures of concerts and celebrities and musicians... This is the way to go. That, and hang out. I need to be willing to spend the day; company would be nice, but at present I only know people that would eventually start whining. Very sad.
Advanced Photography, on the other hand... Ferris has a stick up his ass. Our first assignment was... "Show Me Your Best." He didn't want anything recycled. He wanted our best stuff at that point. Okay. We get that assignment back. I think maybe two people got a B, the rest all got a C. Uhm, okay... You just met most of us. How do you know what our best is and isn't? How do we make up this First, Introductory Assignment? That's like taking a test of abilities for the first time, with only the knowledge you have walking in, and then, after learning more skills and tricks and shortcuts, you take the test again. Of course it'll be better this time. YOU LEARNED MORE. That's not the assignment.
Next assignment was framing. Got a C on that. I didn't care; I hated Framing the second I learned it was a compositional technique. It's worse than the S Curve. S Curves are at least considered "Leading Lines." Framing is crap 90% of the time that I'm presented with it. He showed us a bunch of examples of it. They all sucked in my view. There was ONE example he showed us. The framing was secondary, if not Tertiary, to the main subject. The photo was of two dogs fighting beside a bridge archway. Were the dogs framed? No. The city in the background behind the bridge was framed in the archway. The city was washed out by the sunlight and smog. The Dogs were clearly the main focused, and they weren't framed. You know who showed me good examples of framing, and only two so far? Bender. Her own work. Her own, Non set-up work. Her Journalism, "don't let the subject know you're photographing them" shots. I. Hate. Framing.
The next assignment was "Unusual Perspective." How nice. I like this assignment. I get to take all sorts of weird shots. :D I went to the fire station and took pictures inside their garage. I climbed all over the fire truck, got under it; zoomed in close to valves and guages; took photos of their sweaty, crumbled up equipment (not sure what the actual name of the boots/pants/suspenders are...); took a photo of their hangers; got a reflection shot of the driver's window; got a shot that I have no idea what it was now that I look at it, it was so unsual; took pictures of chrome. I printed a picture of the bumper (Read: A corner of the grill) and the folded up firehose that was inside the cubby. I turn them in and get them back the following week. He holds them up to critique in front of the class. He gives me rave reviews for the chrome and hose texture, how great it is that I got it to look like metal, etc. etc. etc. "But I want to see more of it." (Read: I want it zoomed out.) He couldn't even tell that it was a grill, that's how "unusual" the shot was. "I want to see more." ... What part of UNUSUAL in "Unusual Perspective" are we not agreeing on? I realize that the actual assignment is open to interpretation. Robin Williams on a tricycle counts as unusual perspective. It's a different take on things. No. He wants "more." Not more photos of the grill, not a sprawled out shot of the hose... Zoomed out more. I got a C on that one.
I just turned in the Love assignment. Can't wait to see the big fat "75 = C+" on the back of THAT one when he hands it back.

Apr. 28th, 2006 09:58 amYeah... uh... *scratches head* Apparently I'm having a relapse in my cold that never really went away. Woke up with a frog in my throat again. No, I don't blame my 4-5 hours of sleep per night habit of the last three months. Not one bit. ^_^V
I can't help it; it's the only time I get to roleplay, schedule-wise. It's a nasty drug.
That, and I don't get home until 10 or 11 at night and I have to unwind, nevermind having been up since 7 or 8 in the morning. ^^ Anyway.
Apparently my digi photo class is meeting at the Getty on the 12th, the last day of E3. ;_; I'm gonna have to meet the guys on Wednesday or Tuesday, depending on their and my schedules. I miss them.
Mmm... Gonna try and set up another date with the guy that 'stood me up'.
And then I have another guy that wants to take me out once I'm feeling better and have a free weekend. I laughed at him for that comment; in good humor of course. ^^
Getting lazy with my art prints. I need to print out more copies of the ones that are done, and then I need to finish the new ones I want to bring to the convention. I'm fairly confident I'll do well this year, about as well as I did last year. I might try to do commissions more readily, not just $1 sketches. I'm just unsure of what to charge... :\ I figure $15-45 for simple to complex drawings, $70-120 for color (plus free print, signed and dated, of course)... o_o;; Does... that seem fair to you guys? Do you even know what I'm talking about? :D
New boss = fuckwit. I'm gonna file a formal complaint against him after class. ^_^V

Attention.
Jan. 18th, 2006 08:51 pmI have a new icon. :D
School starts around St. Valentine's Day.
Taking Intermediate Photo, Digital Photo, and Beginning Drawing. Why Beginning Drawing? Because I like the teacher. ^^
That's 9 units, 4 mornings a week; Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Working hopefully 30 hours a week.
I'm going to AnimeLA with Mandy and David. I'll be volunteering.
February 3rd I have a concert with Jarred, his friend, and Atari. It's Tiger Army and Imperative Reaction. If we can't get tickets, we'll just go to a club.
Kyle got me on a PETA kick; I'm going to try and switch most of my products (soaps, shampoos, household cleaners) over to those that don't test on animals. What's the point of that? Well, there isn't a goverment mandate that says companies need to test on animals. That said, animal testing in and of itself is inconclusive and to a point, utterly useless for us as humans. Testing liquids on a rabbit's eye tells us nothing in regards to what it'll do to ours, as a rabbit's eye is virtually nothing like ours. Our skin has certain sensitivities that animals' don't, and vice versa. What burns their skin might be fine on ours. With that in mind, even if a product kills, burns, maims, or blinds an animal, they can still market it: They've tested it, and it's ok to market it.
And yes, there are other methods for testing products. Methods that involve human skin cells (or even stem cells), and not living, breathing, animals that are dissimilar to us. They're expensive, but they won't always be, and supporting the companies that use alternative methods will make it more profitable in the end. And there is a list of said companies.
*scratches head* I think that's about it.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Sep. 20th, 2005 12:32 pmFor those that are unaware and thusly are confused:
I just started a second job (not a "new" job, but a "second", as in TWO) last week, so now I'm working 40-ish hours a week. I asked for Sundays off at Albertson's, and what does my foxtrotting Manager do? She gives me an 8-hour shift. On both Sunday AND Saturday.
( So let's break SPOOn's week down into the days. :) )
"But SPOOn, why not just have your manager not have you close on those nights?"
*dies laughing* *resurrects self* It's actually a lot easier on her if I just have her not schedule me for those days, period. That, and working at Game Stop is actually less stressful, despite what you may think. So when I do get home, I'm not exhausted and smelly and sweaty and covered in botulism. I'm just dusty. ^_^
But anyway, the point of all that was to let you all know that I don't hate you, I still love you, I just have no time to spend with you all. I miss you, though. Don't think I don't.
<333333354543897646
Please pass this info along to any that ask the stupid question, "Where's SPOOn!? :'("
